Ahh…high school…such an important time in everyone’s lives. There is so much drama in high school that every day could become a screenplay in a new blockbuster teen movie.
Tonight, I got to chance to see the new movie, American Teen, with some of the other Elon kids. It was part of the L.A. Film Festival and was shown to a full house at Ford Amphitheatre. The cast and most of the crew were there to see the audience’s reaction.
The movie was not what you’d expect…no Breakfast Club or American Pie. It was a documentary and it followed the lives of five high school teens and chronicled the challenges they faced during their senior year at a public school in Warsaw, IN. All the characters were there (a star athlete, a nerd, a popular girl, an oddball girl, and the popular guy) and the drama that played out was what you’d expect from any fictional high school movie…except this time it was real.
I found it to be a very entertaining and nostalgic experience. Everyone was saying how each character reminded them of someone they knew in high school. The movie did a great job giving us a glimpse into the world of American teenagers and the obstacles they have to deal with. I found myself rooting for the characters along with the rest of the audience and I realized that there’s some things that can’t be written by Hollywood screenwriters. Sometimes the most fascinating stories come from normal everyday life…especially as a teen.

Glad you liked it. I wish the cast was at my screening. I would have loved to talk to the director.
