Well I didn’t exactly have my apple-bottom jeans, but the whole place was definitely looking at me with raised eyebrows when I walked into the BET awards in a blue sundress and white sweater. Surrounded by gold teeth, white tees, and bling down to the knees, I immediately wished I had known I’d be attending the BET awards with Inside Edition when I had gotten ready for work that morning. That way I could have dressed a little more “ghetto-fly.” Regardless of my wholesome outfit, I was still so excited to have the opportunity to be at the awards show.
When I walked on to the Red carpet to help set up for the shoot, my mouth dropped. After we set up, my job was to scope out which stars were walking down the carpet to see if our reporter, Kristina Guerrero, wanted to interview them. This was a much harder task that I initially thought it would be since everyone on the red carpet thought it necessary to wear oversized sunglasses, flashy bling and sideways hats. T-pain? Ludacris? Ne-yo? Ummm…… But, with a little help from a fellow intern who worked for CNN and a photo tip sheet, we figured it out.
At one point, Kristina asked if I wanted to jump in and interview some celebs! So I grabbed the mike and walked up to the barricade separating me from the Red carpet. I interviewed Dr. Bobby Jones, who has the longest-running show on Cable, and Rapper, Flo-Rida, who sings, you guessed it, “shawty had them apple bottom jeans, and boots with the fuuurrr.” I congratulated him on his success and then jokingly apologized for leaving all my bling at home. After the interviews I even got to go out on the Red carpet and practice some stand ups! It was such an amazing experience, and I’ll be sure if I ever go back to the BET awards I won’t dress like a Stepford Wife.
Here’s a video of Flo-Rida performing his hit song.
