In our second day of class we had a lot of ground to cover. We began class talking about the Bio’s we wrote for the actors, producers and directors. Many people found that it was hard to ask questions that would provoke answers that would provide useful information for the Bio. We talked about ways around this and how to use the information we got in a way that would give more information about that person.
We also discussed the articles that we read for our first two assignments. We talked about the similarities and differences between the studio system and the system that exists today. This was an interesting discussion because we found that the system now really is not so different from in the 20s and 30s. The discussion then turned to celebrities speaking out politically. We specifically talked about Oprah and Angelina Jolie. We identified to difference between making political statements and supporting charities. This discussion led us perfectly into the film Shut Up and Sing, a documentary on the Dixie Chicks after they accidentally spoke out politically, which we screened in class.
I really enjoyed watching the film. It was really interesting to see the scenario from an inside perspective and I now have a new respect for the Dixie Chicks. I don’t necessarily agree with how they handled the situation by never apologizing to the fans they offended, but I do like the fact that they stuck to their own morals and did what they felt they had to do.
