One of the best things about being in a new city is sightseeing, and there is no better way to do that than by hiking and taking in all of the beautiful views from different angles. Over this past 4th of July weekend, I combined one of my favorite activities with my favorite holiday, and went holiday hiking at Escondido Falls in Malibu.
Jeff, our friend Corey and I left on Saturday morning and drove to Malibu along the Pacific Coast Highway, which offers one of the most gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean. The trail for the hike begins on the main road and winds through a neighborhood of amazingly beautiful million-dollar homes, and the sign for the Santa Monica mountains towards the end of the pavement indicates that you’ve hit the wilderness part of the trail!
This is a great hike even for a hot, sunny day because the majority of the trail is covered by trees, especially near the lower falls. The trail leads deep into the canyon and crosses over a creek before bringing you to the base of one of the water falls. On our way we passed a few hikers who told us we wouldn’t want to miss the third waterfall…even though it’s a challenge to reach. They were right, on both accounts, and the third waterfall was great from up-close and it was the perfect spot to stop and have lunch!
The waterfalls and mountain views along the Escondido Canyon are well worth the hike, and the muscle aches that last for a few days afterwards!
