On Monday, after an amazing visit from Lauren Tobin, the PR class began a discussion on the paparazzi. Across the table, there were mixed reviews on the paparazzi at large, some of them more sympathetic than others.
While I think it’s easy for the paparazzi to cross the line, generally speaking I think that celebs should suck it up and stop complaining. If there is a violation of their privacy, particularly if it occurs on their private property, or if someone’s safety is at risk, then obviously the media has intruded into an inappropriate territory.
If it weren’t for the paparazzi, many current household names wouldn’t be more than a blip on the Hollywood radar. I think that stars such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, who maintain friendly with the paparazzi, are actually making a brilliant tactical move in terms of their careers. Not only do they avoid the unnecessary stress of not knowing when the paparazzi will show up, but they also reduce the risk of having the paparazzi violate their privacy, and increase their global visibility.
