Many people remember when the news broke that Chris Brown had assaulted his then girlfriend Rihanna after an argument following a pre-Grammy party where the couple was happy and smiling. Sources described Rihanna’s injuries as “horrific” and photos showed major bruises on both sides of her face, a split lip and a bloody nose, and bite marks on one of her arms and several fingers.
This prompted many other young women to begin speaking out about their domestic violence issues. Seeing that it could happen to someone as strong as Rihanna inspired them to start fighting back. So when Rihanna seemingly went back to Chris just weeks later, her fans became confused and were no longer on her side.
Through public appearances since the issue, Rihanna has been able to regain her image while Chris Brown is still struggling. In November, the time that Rihanna was releasing a new album, she did a one-on-one interview with Diane Sawyer. This was her first time speaking publically about the incident and she did so in a poised and mature fashion that showed how much she had grown in recent months. She explained the experience has ‘humiliating’ and ‘traumatizing’ but only choked up when she spoke about the profound effect that this was having on other women looking up to her to whom she offered this advice–“I will say that to any young girl that is going through domestic violence, don’t react off of love. ‘F’ love. Come out of the situation and look at it in the third person and for what it really is.” Seeing her so strong and mature definitely helped her to regain her image, but Chris Brown’s cheesy apologies and weak interviews only dug him into a deeper hole with the public.
“Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem featuring Rihanna which is about domestic violence has been at the top of the charts for weeks, showing how far both of these artists have come since their domestic violence issues. Recently, Chris Brown broke down during a performance at the BET awards where he sang Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”. The emotional breakdown, however, was not well received. Viewers saw red flags for PUBLICITY STUNT and rejected his softer side.
Poor publicity choices has continue to hurt Chris Brown’s damaged image, and I would have suggested he do a similar interview to the one that Rihanna did to express his side of the story and his regret and remorse. During Rihanna’s interview, she expressed that she wished him well with his life and career, and although I am completely opposed to forgiving him, I agree and hope that he has learned from his mistakes and goes on to regain some face in time.
